Westminster helps Rock Meme's Transplant

            With the help of many volunteers, donors, TV stations, Bittersweet Band and the Manna Singers, Westminster helped little Meme Delgado and his family to "rock" his transplant by holding a Spaghetti Dinner & Dance fundraiser Friday, January 29.

As a 5-year-old recovers from another organ transplant in Omaha, the months are adding up. He, his mother, and his two sisters have been away from their Dallas family for more than ten months, hoping for a miracle.

The little boy, Meme Delgado, is clearly a fighter. Born with a chronic intestinal disorder, his mother Tiffany Westphal says his intestinal tract has never fully functioned.

After coming to the Nebraska Medical Center in March 2009, Meme received a transplant in April. "So I thought that was it, I thought we were in the clear, and I was going to have my son, and that he was going to live, and hearing the words rejection, I think those were the hardest words to swallow," said Westphal.
Meme's body rejected the organs, and he underwent an explant. "You lose hope, especially when I came in and they said to me we're going to remove the organs."

In September Meme recieved new transplants, but is still fighting many health concerns and continues to be hospitalized. "We're going to enjoy every moment, we're going to take a million pictures, and take video and just enjoy the time we have." Still, the time spent away is difficult for everyone in Meme's family. "It's hard on one income, my husband's income, living in two states," said Westphal.

      "It's not the amount of money we bring in, to know that that many more people will wish us well, or say a prayer, or keep him in their thoughts, that's what means the most to me," said Westphal.
